Bridges in Lucerne, Switzerland
Since the city straddles the Reuss River where it drains the lake, it has a number of bridges. The most famous is the Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrucke), a 204 m (670 ft) long wooden bridge originally built in 1333, although much of it had to be replaced after a 1993 fire, allegedly caused by a group of smokers.
Partway across, the bridge runs by the octagonal Water Tower (Wasserturm), a fortification from the 13th century. Inside the bridge are a series of paintings from the 17th century depicting events from Luzern's history. The Bridge with its Tower is the city's most famous landmark.
Downriver, between the Kasernenplatz and the Muhlenplatz, the Spreuerbrucke or Mill Bridge zigzags across the Reuss. Constructed in 1408, it is the oldest covered bridge in Europe and features a series of medieval-style 17th Century plague paintings by Kaspar Meglinger titled Dance of Death.
Art in Lucerne, Switzerland
Meglinger's paintings portray various conditions of men and women, priests and warriors, princes and men of learning, the young bride, the devout nun, the lawmaker, the hunter, the miller, even the artist himself, are all depicted at the mercy of Death, with his mocking smile and his ever-changing garb.
These paintings, suitable for a Benedictine abbey, are seen by every inhabitant of beautiful Lucerne who crosses the river via the Spreuerbrucke. It has a small chapel in the middle that was added in 1568.
The Old Town Lucerne
Old Town Lucerne is located just north of the Reuss River, and still has several fine half-timber structures with painted fronts. Remnants of the old town walls exist on the hill above Lucerne, complete with eight tall watch towers. An additional gated tower sits at the base of the hill on the banks of the Reuss River.
The twin needle towers of the cathedral of St. Leodegar sit on a small hill just above the lakefront. Originally built in 735, the present structure was erected in 1633 in the late Renaissance style. However, the towers are surviving remnants of an earlier structure. The interior is richly decorated. The cathedral is popularly called the Hofkirche (German) and is known locally as the Hofchile (Swiss-German).
Lion of Lucerne
Bertel Thorvaldsen's famous carving of a dying lion (the Lion Monument, or Löwendenkmal) is found in a small park just off Lowenplatz. The carving commemorates the hundreds of Swiss Guards who were massacred in 1792 during the French Revolution, when the mob stormed the Tuileries Palace in Paris.
Museums in Lucerne, Switzerland
The Swiss Transport Museum is a large and comprehensive museum exhibiting all forms of transport, including locomotives, automobiles, ships, and aircraft.
The Culture and Convention Center Lucerne beside the lake in the center of the city was designed by Jean Nouvel. The center has one of the world's leading concert halls, with acoustics by Russell Johnson.

Lucerne Holidays - Understanding Lucerne, Switzerland
Lucerne is a city in Switzerland. It is the capital of the Canton of Lucerne and seat of the district with the same name. With a population of 57,533, Lucerne is the most populous city in Central Switzerland and focal point of the region.
Due to its location on the shore of Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstattersee) within sight of Mount Pilatus and Rigi, Lucerne is traditionally considered first and foremost as a tourist destination. One of the city's famous landmarks is Chapel Bridge (Kapellbrucke), a wooden bridge from the 14th Century.
Canton of Lucerne
The canton of Lucerne is located in the centre of Switzerland. It is drained by the river Reuss and the river Kleine Emme. The lands of the canton lie on the northern foothills of the Swiss Alps. The highest elevation of the canton of Lucerne is at the Brienzer Rothorn at 2,350m. The area of the canton is 1,493 km²
History of Lucerne, Switzerland
The city of Lucerne grew from a small fishing village of ancient origins on the shores of Lake Lucerne with the founding of the Benedictine monastery of St. Leodegar in around AD 700. The Latin name "Luciaria" appears in historical records from around AD 840.
The canton of Lucerne comprises territories acquired by its capital Lucerne, either by treaty, armed occupation or purchase, largely by 1415. Lucerne had already joined the Swiss Confederation in 1332. The canton briefly attempted to pursue a policy of separation from 1841-1847 and joined the Sonderbund, which was dissolved by force by a federal army in 1847.
Modern Lucerne, Switzerland
On June 17, 2007 voters of Lucerne and the adjacent municipality of Littau agreed on a merger in a simultanousely held referendum, becoming effective on January 1, 2010. The combined municipality will have a population of around 75,000, making it the seventh largest city in Switzerland, and keep the name and coat of arms of the city of Lucerne.
The successful referendum is expected to pave the way for negotiations with other neighbouring municipalities in an effort to create a unified city-region, based on the results of a study
Population of Lucerne
The population is mainly German speaking and the vast majority is Roman Catholic. The Canton of Lucerne is divided into 5 districts termed Amter. There are 99 municipalities in the canton. The municipalities are part of districts (Aemter), named after their capital (bolded above), except for Entlebuch, whose capital is Schupfheim.
The city's agglomeration consists of 17 municipalities in three cantons with an overall population of nearly 200,000.
Demographics of Lucerne
About nine tenths of the total area is productive land. Agriculture is the most significant source of income, but industry is also developed. The most important agricultural products are crops, fruit and cattle breeding. Industry concentrates on textiles, machinery, paper, wood, tobacco and metallurgical goods.
Tourism is of great importance. The canton of Lucerne is a gateway to holiday resorts in the nearby Alps, and much of the transit traffic between Germany and Italy crosses the region.

Only few European destinations are suitable to tour in all seasons. One of them is Switzerland, which offers delightful snow-holidays in winter and lusciously luxurious scenery in the spring.
It is wonderful to travel around Switzerland at any time of the year - so plan your Lucerne holiday today. Lucerne is a lovely little town in the German-speaking part of Switzerland. Conveniently located within an hour by train from Zurich, it is sited on the banks of Lake Lucerne.
Switerland itself enjoys moderate weather by virtue of being in the center of Europe. Lucerne has the best weather pattern of all Switzerland, with snow-capped peaks of Mt.Pilatus and Mt.Rigi offering some winter sporting enjoyment while the lovely lake itself is pleasant to cruise on around the year.
The old town is beautifully archaic and quaint, with cobblestoned streets retaining their pristine delightfulness of old. The Chapel Bridge, twice burned down and rebuilt, remains the most photographed landmark of Lucerne - a spot where anyone on a Lucerne holiday is sure to have had a snapshot taken.
Deluxe hotels in Lucerne are among the best in Switzerland. The Swiss take hospitality seriously and you will be pampered and cared for in great luxury and comfort in any deluxe Swiss hotel. On a Lucerne holiday, if you can afford it, stay at the Palace Luzern hotel - one of the oldest, best known hotels in Switzerland, and member of the Deluxe Swiss Hotel group.
Delicacies to tickle your palate include cheese fondue, sausages and an array of vintage wines from the hotel's cellar. Your Lucerne holiday won't be complete, though, without enjoying a dinner cruise on lovely Lake Lucerne, watching the sun set over the mountains. Very romantic!
Speaking of cruises on Lake Lucerne, it is quite easy to spend all day hopping on and off the ferry, traveling around the lake. It has some of the most spectacular views anywhere in Switzerland, and at various points around its shore, you can alight to visit other lovely locations like Mt.Rigi, Mt.Pilatus and some of the old towns dotted around the countryside.
Or you may want to take long walks down the old town, or in the countryside watching cattle graze to the merry tinkle of the bells around their neck. You may find yourself wondering if you'll turn the next corner and come across Heidi - that's how magical your Lucerne holiday can be.
If you are planning your Lucerne holiday in the months of June, July or August, you may be best advised to book your Swiss hotel early because they are often full during this period. A horde of tourists from all over the world will swarm into Switzerland at this time, giving the town a colorful, diverse glitter and glamor that's not seen at other times.
In the end, don't forget to have fun on your Lucerne holiday. Don't get caught up spending too much time indoors in your deluxe Swiss hotel, or sailing around the lake, or climbing mountains. Strive for a mix and enjoy experiencing all aspects of your Lucerne holiday - to make it a memory worth cherishing for a lifetime.
